Donald Duke, a former Cross River state governor and currently a 2019 presidential candidate in Nigeria, has said he believes “homosexual conduct” should be illegal. Recall in 2014, Nigeria’s former president, Goodluck Jonathan, signed the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill (SSMPA) into law. The law forbids any cohabitation between same-sex sexual partners and bans any “public show of same sex amorous relationship.” The SSMPA imposes a 10-year prison sentence on anyone who “registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organization” or “supports” the activities of such organizations. Punishments are severe, ranging from 10 to 14 years in prison.

South African hip hop & pop star, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, known by his stage name AKA is being attacked by homophobic trolls in response to a series of pictures posted on social media.The images, shared on Twitter over the weekend, show a shirtless man – said by some to be AKA – reportedly hugging another shirtless man in a bar or a club. There were also claims that the first man appears to only be wearing his underwear. “AKA is gay so are his fans,” tweeted one commentator.

Following an undercover investigation by Josh Parry of the Liverpool Echo, the pastor-in-charge at the Anfield parish of the Mountain of Miracles and Fire Ministries (MFM), Dr. Desmond Desmond Sanusi has said the church does not discriminate against people’s sexuality. Parry, a senior reporter at Liverpool Echo, had posed as a member of the public questioning his sexuality, and was invited to have a private counselling session with the church’s assistant pastor Brother Michael. The assistant pastor is said to have offered  a ‘conversion therapy’ to “cure” homosexuality, recommending a 3-day programme which involved not eating or drinking.

The Ogun State Police Command has in custody two men after one of them filed a complaint that the other allegedly ruptured his rectum with a promise of N20,000. Disclosing this in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi said the two men, Ademola Adekunle and Okon Bassey, were arrested following “a complaint by the first suspect, Bassey, who reported at Onipanu Divisional Headquarters on Wednesday, August 29, that the second suspect, Adekunle is threatening his life.

Nigerian police are considering charges against 42 men arrested in Lagos on account of their alleged homosexuality, the latest example of the country’s tough stance against the gay community. In 2014, former president Goodluck Jonathan signed the same-sex marriage prohibition bill, forbidding marriage, same-sex cohabitation and any “public show of same-sex amorous relationship”.
