Donald Duke, a former Cross River state governor and currently a 2019 presidential candidate in Nigeria, has said he believes “homosexual conduct” should be illegal. Recall in 2014, Nigeria’s former president, Goodluck Jonathan, signed the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill (SSMPA) into law. The law forbids any cohabitation between same-sex sexual partners and bans any “public show of same sex amorous relationship.” The SSMPA imposes a 10-year prison sentence on anyone who “registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organization” or “supports” the activities of such organizations. Punishments are severe, ranging from 10 to 14 years in prison.

Meanwhile, Donald Duke – who was recently interviewed On The Couch, a show hosted by Laila Johnson-Salami and Falz the Bahd Guy – made strong statements about LGBTs in Nigeria saying, “I don’t understand their sexuality. But I will not criminalise them. I will ensure that they have the protection of the law.” Reversing his initial statements on air, Duke has released a statement:

Recently, a statement I made during an interview concerning gay rights and homosexuality has been construed as my affirmation of homosexuality and same sex marriage. Nothing is further from the truth. Homosexuality is a crime in Nigeria and ought to remain so. What I however did say is that I would not go seeking homosexuals for prosecution as this is liable to abuses and as such would rather not delve into the sexuality of an individual. For the avoidance of doubt, our law on homosexuality stands in fact and in my moral rectitude.

South African hip hop & pop star, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, known by his stage name AKA is being attacked by homophobic trolls in response to a series of pictures posted on social media. The images, shared on Twitter over the weekend, show a shirtless man – said by some to be AKA – reportedly hugging another shirtless man in a bar or a club. There were also claims that the first man appears to only be wearing his underwear. “AKA is gay so are his fans,” tweeted one commentator.

Another said: “Trying to paint AKA as gay, so as to degrade him is actually pathetic… Homophobes never rest.”The 30-year-old music star has laughed off the photos, but didn’t confirm whether or not they are actually of him. He also made it clear that he doesn’t think that being called gay is an issue in the first place. In his tweet, AKA said, “I’m not bothered by being called ‘gay’… What I am bothered by is that you guys think Im so lit I would take my pants off in a club after a show. ”

Following an undercover investigation by Josh Parry of the Liverpool Echo, the pastor-in-charge at the Anfield parish of the Mountain of Miracles and Fire Ministries (MFM), Dr. Desmond Desmond Sanusi has said the church does not discriminate against people’s sexuality. Parry, a senior reporter at Liverpool Echo, had posed as a member of the public questioning his sexuality, and was invited to have a private counselling session with the church’s assistant pastor Brother Michael. The assistant pastor is said to have offered  a ‘conversion therapy’ to “cure” homosexuality, recommending a 3-day programme which involved not eating or drinking.

Wearing a hidden microphone, Parry was then told that being gay is a ‘deceit of Satan’. When confronted with the recording, Dr. Desmond Sanusi told the ECHO: “What [Brother Michael] discussed with you. It is out of my guidance. I am the pastor of this church. It is not a three-day fasting. We don’t discriminate against anybody. We’re a church of god. We follow what is in the bible. Jesus did not at any point discriminate against people. People come to the church to pray and to know God better and that’s why people come to the church.

“I am speaking as the authority of the church, as the pastor of the church, and I am telling you we are a church that does not discriminate against people. As the pastor of the church, any other thing you hear from any other person, either an assistant or members of the church, that does not carry the representation of the church.” Founded in 1989 in Lagos, Nigeria, by Dr. Gabriel Odukoya, MFM which has its headquarters in Nigeria, has 90 branches in the UK including in Liverpool and Manchester.

Gay conversion “therapies” are based on the premise that being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender is a mental illness that can be “cured.” Meanwhile the British government is planning to outlaw so-called gay conversion therapy as part of an effort to counter intolerance and discrimination. This is following a survey of LGBT people that found 2% of the 108,000 respondents had undergone conversion therapy while 5% had been offered it.

In a statement issued in July 2018, British Prime Minister Theresa May said she had been “struck by just how many respondents said they cannot be open about their sexual orientation or avoid holding hands with their partner in public for fear of a negative reaction.” She said, “No one should ever have to hide who they are or who they love. This LGBT action plan will set out concrete steps to deliver real and lasting change across society, from health and education to tackling discrimination and addressing the burning injustices that LGBT people face.”

The World Health Organization declassified homosexuality a mental condition in 1992.
